Why Is My Car’s Fuel Economy Getting Worse?

If you’re filling up more often than you used to, your vehicle is trying to tell you something.

Declining fuel economy is one of those problems that sneaks up on you. There’s rarely a single dramatic moment where your gas mileage drops off a cliff. Instead, you gradually notice you’re stopping at the pump more often, or that a tank doesn’t take you as far as it used to.

The good news is that most causes of poor fuel economy are identifiable and fixable. Some are as simple as adding air to your tires. Others point to a mechanical issue worth addressing before it becomes something larger.

1. Underinflated Tires

This is the most common cause of reduced fuel economy, and the easiest to correct.

When tires are underinflated, more of the tire surface contacts the road, which increases rolling resistance. Your engine has to work harder to maintain the same speed, and that extra effort shows up at the pump.

Tires lose pressure naturally over time, roughly one PSI per month, and they lose more in cold weather. That means a tire that was properly inflated in August may be noticeably low by November.

What to do: Check your tire pressure monthly when the tires are cold. Use the pressure listed on the sticker inside your driver’s door jamb, not the maximum pressure printed on the tire sidewall.

2. A Clogged Engine Air Filter

Your engine needs a precise mixture of air and fuel to run efficiently. When the air filter becomes clogged with dust and debris, airflow is restricted, and the engine compensates in ways that reduce efficiency.

Air filters are inexpensive and easy to replace, which makes this one of the better returns on a small maintenance investment.

What to do: Have your air filter inspected during routine service. If you frequently drive on gravel roads or in dusty conditions, it may need replacing more often than the standard interval suggests.

3. Worn Spark Plugs

Spark plugs ignite the air and fuel mixture in your engine’s cylinders. As they wear, that ignition becomes less complete and less consistent, which means fuel is burned less efficiently.

Worn plugs often produce other symptoms alongside poor fuel economy, including rough idling, hesitation during acceleration, and occasional misfires.

What to do: Check your owner’s manual for the recommended replacement interval. Modern iridium and platinum plugs can last up to 100,000 miles, while older copper plugs typically need replacement much sooner.

4. Failing Oxygen Sensors

Your vehicle’s oxygen sensors measure the oxygen content in the exhaust and send that data to the engine control module, which uses it to adjust the air and fuel mixture in real time.

When a sensor degrades, it sends inaccurate readings, and the engine may run richer than it needs to. Burning more fuel than necessary is the direct result.

A failing oxygen sensor will often, though not always, trigger a check engine light.

What to do: This requires diagnostic equipment to confirm. If your fuel economy has dropped noticeably and a check engine light is on, oxygen sensors are a common culprit worth investigating.

5. A Dirty or Failing Mass Airflow Sensor

The mass airflow sensor measures how much air is entering the engine. When it becomes contaminated or begins to fail, the readings it provides are inaccurate, and fuel delivery is thrown off as a result.

Symptoms can include rough idling, hesitation, difficulty starting, and reduced fuel economy.

What to do: In some cases the sensor simply needs cleaning. In others it needs replacement. A technician can test the sensor to determine which.

6. Brake Problems

A sticking brake caliper or a brake that isn’t fully releasing creates constant drag on the wheel. Your engine works harder to overcome that resistance, and fuel economy suffers.

This one often comes with other clues, including a burning smell after driving, uneven brake wear, the vehicle pulling to one side, or a wheel that feels unusually hot after a drive.

What to do: Have your braking system inspected. A dragging brake is both a fuel economy issue and a safety concern.

7. Wheel Alignment Issues

When your wheels aren’t properly aligned, they aren’t rolling in the same direction. That fights against forward motion and increases rolling resistance in much the same way underinflated tires do.

Signs of an alignment problem include the vehicle pulling to one side, a steering wheel that isn’t centered when driving straight, and uneven tire wear.

What to do: If you’ve hit a significant pothole or curb recently, or if you’re noticing any of the above symptoms, an alignment check is worthwhile. It also protects your tires from premature wear.

8. Old or Incorrect Engine Oil

Engine oil reduces friction between moving parts. As it degrades, it becomes less effective at that job, and the engine has to work harder.

Using the wrong viscosity of oil can have a similar effect. Modern engines are engineered for specific oil weights, and using something thicker than specified increases internal resistance.

What to do: Follow your manufacturer’s recommended oil change interval and use the oil type specified in your owner’s manual.

9. Your Driving Habits

Not every cause is mechanical. How you drive has a substantial effect on fuel economy, and habits change gradually without us noticing.

Factors that reduce fuel economy include:

  • Aggressive acceleration and hard braking
  • Sustained high speeds, since aerodynamic drag increases sharply above roughly 50 mph
  • Extended idling
  • Frequent short trips, where the engine never reaches optimal operating temperature
  • Carrying unnecessary weight or leaving a roof rack or cargo carrier installed when not in use
  • Heavy air conditioning use, particularly at low speeds

What to do: Smoother acceleration, steadier highway speeds, and removing unused cargo carriers can all produce measurable improvements without spending anything.

10. Seasonal and Environmental Factors

Sometimes the explanation isn’t a problem at all.

Cold weather reduces fuel economy for several reasons. Engines take longer to reach efficient operating temperature, oil is thicker when cold, tire pressure drops, and winter gasoline blends contain slightly less energy per gallon than summer blends. Drivers commonly see a noticeable dip in mileage during the coldest months.

Terrain matters too. If your commute or driving pattern has changed to include more hills or more stop and go traffic, that alone can account for a difference.

When to Have Your Vehicle Checked

A gradual, modest decline in fuel economy over years is normal as a vehicle ages. A sudden or significant drop is worth investigating.

Schedule an inspection if you notice:

  • A sharp decrease in fuel economy over a short period
  • A check engine light along with reduced mileage
  • Rough idling, hesitation, or misfires
  • Unusual smells, especially fuel or burning odors
  • Visible black smoke from the exhaust

These combinations often point to a specific mechanical cause that a diagnostic scan and inspection can identify.
