How to Know It’s Time for New Brake Pads (Before You Hear the Squeal)

Stop Before It’s Too Late: Early Signs Your Brake Pads Are Worn Out

Your brakes are your car’s most important safety system. But many drivers wait until their car squeals, grinds, or loses stopping power before checking their brake pads. That delay could cost you more than just money, it could risk your safety.

At Bret’s Auto Repair in Lynnwood, we help drivers stay ahead of costly brake repairs with honest inspections and timely service.

What Do Brake Pads Actually Do?

Brake pads are the friction material that press against the rotors when you apply the brakes. Over time, this material wears down, making your vehicle less safe and more expensive to fix if ignored.

Six Signs Your Brake Pads May Be Worn (Before the Noise Starts)

1. Longer Stopping Distance

If your car takes longer than usual to come to a stop, it could mean your brake pads are worn thin.

2. Vibration When Braking

Warped rotors or uneven pad wear can cause vibrations or a pulsating pedal. The sensation is usually worse when braking at higher speeds or when going downhill.  You will feel this sensation of a “shaky” steering wheel when applying the brakes.

3. Brake Pedal Feels Soft or Spongy

This may indicate air in the brake lines or that your pads are too worn to grip effectively.

4. Dashboard Brake Warning Light

Don’t ignore it. This light often activates when sensors detect thin pads or hydraulic issues.

5. Pulling to One Side

Uneven pad wear can cause your car to pull left or right during braking.

6. Visual Inspection

You can sometimes see through the wheels: if the pad material is less than ¼ inch thick, it’s time for replacement.

When Should Brake Pads Be Replaced?

  • Typically every 25,000–70,000 miles, depending on driving habits, terrain, and pad quality.
  • If you’re in stop-and-go traffic frequently or drive in the rain, your pads wear faster.

At Bret’s, we check your pads every time you come in for service.

Tip: Replace Pads Before They Damage the Rotors

Letting brake pads wear down too far can cause:

  • Scored or warped rotors
  • Brake fluid overheating
  • Complete brake failure

Replacing rotors adds significant cost; prevent it with timely pad service.
