Understanding Your Vehicle’s Warning Lights: What They Mean & What To Do

Those Mysterious Dashboard Lights

We’ve all been there—cruising along when suddenly a light pops up on the dashboard. It’s tempting to ignore it, but those warning indicators are your car’s way of asking for help. Knowing what they mean can save you from expensive repairs and keep you safe on the road.

At Bret’s Auto Repair in Lynnwood, we help drivers throughout North King & Snohomish counties stay informed and proactive about vehicle health.

Common Warning Lights & What They Indicate

Check Engine Light (CEL)

What it looks like: Usually a small engine icon, sometimes blinking. icon, “Check Engine” icon, wrench symbol icon – either illuminated solid yellow or red, sometimes blinking red.

What it means: The CEL is tied to multiple systems—emissions systems, ignition systems, powertrain systems, fuel systems. If it’s steady, it’s usually safe to drive to a shop soon. If it’s flashing, stop immediately and call us; it may indicate engine misfires that can damage your catalytic converter.

Brake System Warning Light

What it looks like: A circle with an exclamation point or the word “BRAKE.”

What it means: This could signal low brake fluid, worn brake pads, or an issue with your ABS. It’s crucial to address brake warnings right away, especially if you experience a fading brake pedal, or unusual or different sounds when braking. Call or stop in so we can quickly assess your situation to ensure your stopping power is intact or if it is an immediate critical safety related brake problem.

Engine Temperature Light

What it looks like: A thermometer over water lines.

What it means: Your engine is overheating. Pull over safely, turn off the car, DO NOT attempt to release your coolant reservoir cap or radiator cap. Be patient, call us to discuss your situation and allow the engine to cool down naturally. Driving while your engine is running hotter than the manufacturer’s designed temperature range can cause serious internal engine problems, such as warped or cracked cylinder heads or cracked cylinder head gaskets. Over heating symptoms create air bubbles. Your cooling is designed to only hold so much pressure and bubbles induce additional pressure, causing additional cooling components to prematurely crack, fracture, or fail.

Battery or Charging Alert

What it looks like: A battery symbol.

What it means: There may be an issue with your alternator, battery, improper connections, or charging system. Your car could soon fail to start, or your engine could fail without warning.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

What it looks like: A horseshoe-like symbol with an exclamation point.

What it means: One or more tires is underinflated. Check your pressures to avoid blowouts and improve fuel efficiency.
